Observations & Invention: Exploring Greece through Collage with Nancy Gruskin

Join Nancy Gruskin for an exciting exploration in collage on the stunning Greek island of Skopelos!

We’ll immerse ourselves in a place of spectacular beauty and celebrate it through color and shape. We will record our observations of the local landscape, architecture, artifacts and people by keeping a sketchbook of drawings, taking photographs and collecting the unusual and exotic materials we’ll discover in a Greek island environment. These materials will inspire hand-painted collage papers, which we’ll make with drawing paper and acrylic paint. We will then interpret our observations of Skopelos when we cut and paste our papers into wonderfully inventive compositions. Collage is the perfect medium for loosening up, taking risks, and letting your imagination run wild!

Mornings will be spent working together in our open air studio. In the afternoon, you’re free to continue working independently or relax, swim, explore and enjoy the island. We’ll meet again on alternate evenings for a special series of cultural presentations that will introduce you to Greek history, mythology, customs, the traditional roles of women and men, and an evening of Greek music and dancing!

Our workshop begins with an inspiring visit to Athens, highlighted by tours of the Acropolis and the spectacular Acropolis Museum. We’ll explore the quaint streets of this legendary city and dine in lively tavernas !

Fees includes: Workshop Tuition, 11 nights accommodations in Athens and Skopelos, Cultural presentations, land and sea travel in Greece including Athens/Skopelos RT, Field trips and Museum admissions; does not include airfare and most meals. Spouse/Non-students are excluded from studio classes but may enjoy all other facets of the program including field trips, archaeological sites and museum visits, cultural presentations and social activities.
