The Island Center for the Arts is a Cooperating Institute of Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a non-profit educational institution and that works cooperatively with universities, art colleges, art centers and museums. Our Programs in Greece were established in 1988.

At the Island Center you'll receive individualized instruction in small classes. Our experienced professors and instructors pride themselves on their warm, encouraging teaching style. We motivate our students to do their very best work, while the stunning visual surroundings and cultural differences provide inspiration for artistic exploration. Once you've experienced the Island Center's courses, you'll understand why so many program veterans have returned to Skopelos to continue exploring the paths they have discovered here.

The challenges and delights of exploring a new culture mean that learning at the Island Center is a process that goes beyond class time and fills every moment of the day. Our programs give artists of all levels the opportunity to expand their artistic vision in response to the legendary light and color of the Aegean.

We offer something unique in terms of foreign study programs. We call it the ISLAND CENTER ADVANTAGE.

Because the directors of the Island Center are residents of Skopelos, you'll be welcomed to the island not simply as a tourist, but as an invited guest. When you're invited to island festivals and welcomed into village homes, it becomes a doorway into another world and an experience to last a lifetime.

The Island of Skopelos

Pine covered mountains and cultivated hillsides of olive and plum trees characterize the landscape of Skopelos. Located in the Northern Aegean Sea, midway between Athens and Thessaloniki, Skopelos is an island of about 5000 permanent residents, whose livelihood, until recently, has depended on farming and fishing. While other Greek islands have been hard hit by tourism, Skopelos has managed to maintain its traditional character and charm. The island's indigenous arts of wood carving, pottery, and lace making are still practiced by local artisans.

Rising steeply on a hillside overlooking the harbor, the main village of Skopelos is a delightful maze of cobblestone steps and streets crowned at the top by the ruins of a Venetian Castle. Byzantine chapels, stucco houses with tile roofs and wooden balconies overflowing with bougainvillea make it an ideal location for artists.

The wild landscape of the island is stunningly beautiful; steep cliffs descend to the sea and remote monasteries are set amidst a background of wildflowers. Fine beaches and swimming coves line the coast and the crystal clear Aegean waters are invitingly warm from June to October. The island may be explored by bus, rented car, motorbike or on foot.

In Summer, Skopelos exudes a cosmopolitan atmosphere as European visitors fill the tavernas and cafes that line the harbor side. Skopelos boasts a lively night life with music and dancing clubs, or one can find respite with a few friends in a quiet country restaurant under the stars.
